Book summary¶

AWLL1.5 Stephanie covers the summer after graduation (June–August 1981): Jennifer’s hidden Stanford choice detonates Steve’s IIT plan and forces the Triumvirate — Kara, Bethany, Joyce, and a meddling Stephanie — to stabilize him before Chicago. Kara reclaims Steve sexually and negotiates evangelical parents, Hyde Park housing with Elyse, and a “behave” rule that still allows farewell flings (Trish, Shelly, Laura revisit). Stephanie engineers Karin’s visit as a wedge; Steve falls in love with Karin again but defers engagement until June 1982 Sweden. Jennifer’s August collapse (vodka, pot, years of lies including Ted) becomes recovery through Doctor Mercer, friendship, and a one-time apartment closure with Steve and Stephanie that ends the sibling affair by mutual choice. Ed Krajick dates Stephanie; Joyce and Bethany receive long goodbyes. The book ends with a dawn run to Chicago — Kara and Mrs. Blanchard in the wagon, Judy shut out — and Steve on I-275 toward IIT, committed to Kara, not a prologue wife.
