Book summary

AWLL1.6 Kara I covers August 1981–May 1982: Steve's freshman year at IIT in Hyde Park while dating Kara in Milford and sharing an apartment with Elyse. Kara's evangelical parents, Alan Blanchard, and Pastor Kent wage war over premarital sex, church standing, and a planned July cohabitation after Steve's Sweden trip. Steve balances Stephanie (occasional sex until July), Tatyana Voronin (DC romance), Joyce, Jessica, Becky, Papiya, and a shrinking fling list against calculus, karate, vet software, and Outfit business in Cicero. Midterms, Thanksgiving and Christmas homecomings, Spring Break farewells, and partner-count reckoning (~45) narrow his world toward Kara. The book ends at Kara's May graduation party when she announces moving in — then Alan collapses in church, dies of a heart attack, Kent preaches "the wages of sin is death," and Steve punches Kent.
