  • Backstory 1: November 9, 1961, Milford, Ohio — Sixteen-year-old Francheska "Fran" Sorkin (later Fran Mercer) lives on Brandon Avenue and attends Milford school on Lila Avenue, looking ahead to a new high school building and to college (likely psychology). She dates Ben Goldfeder (rabbi's son) at the Sadie Hawkins sock hop after Frisch's Big Boy with friends Allison, Beverly Thompson, Bobby Block, and others. Fran resists her parents' and sister Elizabeth's scrutiny, admires Ben's kisses, and decides she would go parking if he asks.   • Backstory 2: November 9, 1961, Milford, Ohio (same evening) — After the dance, Ben takes Fran to hot fudge sundaes at the Ben Franklin five-and-dime, where she introduces him to Sam Mercer (soda jerk; store manager's son; senior; plans UC aerospace/NASA).
