Book summary

Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Kane leaves Ohio poverty for Chicago's Spurgeon Capital mailroom, trading physical labor for a plotted climb toward trading. Year one is education by fire: night accounting at UICC, a paper-then-real portfolio, mentorship from currency trader Matheson, and philosophy from Anala. Romance is never simple—Bev, the hometown best friend pregnant by another boy, remains emotionally central; Jeri funds his investing but loses sexual partnership when he rejects manipulation; Bianca and the Loyola game weekends offer controlled hedonism until Paula's rape-murder shatters the group and leaves the killer at large.

Jonathan learns consent, peer pressure, and self-discipline through Violet (trauma survivor, platonic study partner), Huifen (math major, practical match), Lily (faith vs. desire), and workplace temptations. He earns mailroom supervisor promotion, leases a Rogers Park house with roommates, and ends Book 1 driving to Ohio for Bev's delivery of Heather Nicole—loving her, refusing a rushed marriage, and returning to Chicago with August choices (Huifen, career rung, fatherhood-by-proxy) still open. The ladder's first rung is climbed; the next tests loyalty, love, and money.

CTL 1 Chapter Summaries

  • Chapter 1: Eighteen-year-old Jonathan Kane starts in the Spurgeon Capital mailroom on June 1, 1981, after Uncle Alec arranges the job through Noel Spurgeon. Orientation with Paul Dierks and supervisor Mr. Nelson establishes strict floor rules and a merit-minded work ethic. He directs ten percent of pay into a Spurgeon mutual fund and commits to climbing the firm from the bottom.
  • Chapter 2: Jonathan leases a furnished garage loft for August 1, opens a First Chicago account, and explores Chicago neighborhoods. Architecture student Anala introduces him to IIT sophomore Gudia Chaudhary for a first date. Aunt Wendy shares family history and warns him about birth control.
  • Chapter 3: Paul Dierks is fired for fraternizing with a secretary; Jonathan earns a merit raise and covers the mailroom alone. Dates with Gudia deepen; they agree he will learn markets while she pursues math and computing for a trading edge. Jonathan obtains an Illinois driver's license after a brutal DMV wait.
  • Chapter 4: Charlotte O'Malley becomes the first female mailroom hire. Currency trader Murray Matheson intercepts Jonathan's SEC study request and gives him the red Kindergarten binder. Jonathan befriends bike messenger Stuart Kowalski and notices Hart-Lincoln receptionist Rachel Kealty.
  • Chapter 5: Brookfield Zoo leads to first sex with Gudia; she wants parental approval before calling him her boyfriend and frames dating toward marriage. Secretary Julie Harris is fired for refusing Bill Mertens. Jonathan rejects continuing a sexual fling with Charlotte after her behavior alarms him.
  • Chapter 6: Charlotte refuses a secretary promotion from Mertens. Anala explains Indian dating pragmatics and sends Jonathan to read the Kama Sutra. Stuart friendship solidifies; Great America with his crew is set for July 11.
  • Chapter 7: Jonathan tells Charlotte he is prioritizing Gudia; Lisa snoops in his room. Long talks at the Chicago Botanic Garden cover caste, politics, and Anala's one-step-at-a-time relationship philosophy. Gudia plans July 3–4 holiday dates.
  • Chapter 8: Mr. Chaudhary grills Jonathan at a July 4 lunch. Rachel Kealty, Eric Thiele's niece, deliberately befriends Jonathan after overhearing Matheson praise him. She wants a traditional Catholic marriage with many children and an equal partner who rises with her.
  • Chapter 9: Gudia picnic and a matinee; Jonathan juggles Rachel while missing a Thursday call to Gudia. Rachel's Kealty family dinner in Blue Island goes well. Spurgeon faces space crunch and likely move to Hancock Center; Samantha Spurgeon appears on the floor.
  • Chapter 10: Jonathan calls Gudia from a payphone; she ends things learning he dated Rachel Thursday. Oak Street Beach with Stuart's group leads to sex with Maria's sister Teresa—her first time. Move to Polk apartment is one week away.
  • Chapter 11: Teresa remains a weekend partner; Rachel helps Jonathan shop and set up his garage apartment on August 1. Uncle Alec advises commission-free Spurgeon trading and muni-bond seed capital. Nelson scouts Hancock; Charlotte is on a probation warning.
  • Chapter 12: Housewarming BBQ with Tom, Maria, Teresa, Stuart, and others; Jonathan begins biking to Michigan Avenue and showering at work. Columbus Day weekend move is confirmed. Lily Andros takes increasing interest in him.
  • Chapter 13: Lily's Wednesday dinners escalate; religion ends any romantic future with Rachel at Mr. Greek Gyros. Trader Jack Gilham is terminated for SEC violations. Charlotte resigns and is escorted out; Harry Foulkes is hired for Monday.
  • Chapter 14: Lily dinners continue; Gudia slow-reset dates in Bridgeport. Gilham is arrested; Harry Foulkes proves competent. Tom asks Jonathan to be a groomsman; Teresa overnight stays begin.
  • Chapter 15: Jonathan passes probation at seven dollars an hour and aces Matheson's oral exam on the red binder, earning the blue futures/options binder. Rachel's birth-control theology gap is deemed irreconcilable. Journey concert with Teresa; Gudia will not share him intimately while he sees others.
  • Chapter 16: Labor Day cookout with Stuart's circle. Matheson orders urgent hand delivery to Norman Monroe at the First Chicago Building while Nelson scouts Hancock. Jonathan sends first money home to his mother; Gudia asks to stay overnight despite non-exclusivity tension.
  • Chapter 17: Jonathan refuses coffee with Papiya and spends Saturday with Lily at the laundromat, then Cubs and sex with Teresa. At Uncle Alec's he endures Lisa. Monday Maxim's dinner with Rachel is a long atheism-versus-Catholicism debate with no resolution.
  • Chapter 18: Fire Academy barbecue; Nelson tours Hancock floors 30–32. Matheson passes Jonathan's second oral exam and assigns regulation study plus a three-month paper portfolio. Gudia refuses to defy her father; Great America with Teresa follows.
  • Chapter 19: Columbus Day weekend: Jonathan supervises Spurgeon's move to Hancock with union negotiator Theo Lipari and foreman Gio Moretti. Sharon Williams, Enderlee's secretary, has a one-night stand with him in the company hotel. Move completes; secretaries unpack Monday.
  • Chapter 20: On October 13 Lily turns eighteen; Jonathan asks her to go steady and they make love. October 16 is their first official date. He tells Teresa they are exclusive and meets Lily's parents formally.
  • Chapter 21: Sunday football introduces Lily to Teresa. Jonathan rebuffs Anala's spiritual overture at David's diner. Matheson sends him to courier with Norman Monroe; Emily Coghlan questions Spurgeon culture. He tells Rachel he and Lily are steady.
  • Chapter 22: Personnel confirms Monroe and Emily Coghlan coming to Spurgeon. Jeri Lundgren, fifteen, talks with Jonathan at Uncle Alec's about Foundation wealth and Noel Spurgeon at galas. Monroe starts Monday; Jonathan resets Monroe's self-moved terminal.
  • Chapter 23: Monroe blames Jonathan for terminal policy; Anala helps draft a résumé and pushes UICC enrollment. Nelson backs Jonathan over Monroe's lies. Lisa erupts at uncle dinner; Bev Newton is pregnant by ex Bob Leahy, due June.
  • Chapter 24: Anala approves Jonathan's résumé; he mails six firms. November 13 Black Friday layoffs fire twenty staff; Jonathan survives and packs offices with temp Nickie Marsh. SpiderDan climbs Hancock October 31.
  • Chapter 25: Foulkes moves to runner; mailroom is two-man until January. Nickie flirts; Jonathan cites Lily. Kristy Benton is hired as afternoon temp. Jeri wants a platonic phone friendship.
  • Chapter 26: Shorthanded mailroom grinds on. Rachel declares love and offers sex without church conditions; Jonathan is skeptical. Lily pushes living together at Morton's; love talk sours into silent treatment.
  • Chapter 27: Jeri hosts Jonathan at Kenwood for Thanksgiving when her parents are away. Anala diagnoses Lily's sulk; rose-and-card apology works. They reconcile with a no-silent-treatment rule and June lease non-renewal plan.
  • Chapter 28: Thanksgiving with Jeri covers Spurgeon men and wealth. Anala repairs friendship; Jonathan reads Western civ and the Economist. Tom's group continues; Stuart dates Sylvia from church.
  • Chapter 29: Dustin reveals his gay relationship with artist Tim. Lily cannot explain the issue: brother Costas was disowned for being gay. Lily sneaks to Jonathan's apartment at 2:30 a.m. Monroe melts OHP foil in the copier; Jonathan wins a ten-dollar bet with Nelson.
  • Chapter 30: Jonathan and Lily break up over non-negotiable church marriage terms. Rachel offers similar Catholic terms plus birth control later. December 18 Christmas party brings an eight-hundred-dollar bonus; Loyola threesome with Kristy and Allyson; Lily says goodbye.
  • Chapter 31: Second Loyola night with Kristy; Rachel gives Lo/Ovral samples claiming church disagreement. Jeri invites Jonathan in alone; he refuses because she is fifteen. Lily's confession to a priest ends reconciliation for good.
