Book summary¶

Jonathan Kane rises from mailroom supervisor to licensed securities analyst at Spurgeon Capital while finishing UIC classes, relocating to a Rogers Park house, and navigating a crowded romantic and social life. Bev Newton visits with Heather; they love each other but defer marriage for Ohio school, childcare, and his unsettled Chicago path. Huifen returns for a practical non-exclusive partnership; Violet ends therapy and becomes a study partner and fund investor.

Career threads dominate: Series 3 and Series 7 licenses, Murray Matheson's analyst offer, floor 29 build-out, Bloomberg terminals, Jeri Lundgren's trust and Cincinnatus Fund, and mailroom succession through Jack Clinton. Jonathan investigates Mark Knopf / Marcus Brand and his father's 1962 death while debating ethics with Marcia Blake and philosophy with Anala.

Bob Leahy's custody fight subpoenas Jonathan. A January 1983 Clermont County hearing collapses when blood types prove Bob is not Heather's father. Bev stops speaking—until she whispers from a payphone that Heather's biological father is Glen Rodgers, Jonathan's mother's fiancé. Book 2 ends on that shock, with analyst life begun and family loyalty in ruins.

CTL 2 Chapter Summaries¶

Chapter 1: Jonathan starts mailroom supervisor June 14 after Heather's birth; he defies Kelly Lochner over innocent time with Violet. Emily Coughlan is fired for removing copier notices on Norman Monroe's orders; Monroe escapes blame. Matheson summons Jonathan, praises his bluntness, and wants the Monroe feud buried.
Chapter 2: Jonathan ends things with Phoebe at Sally's Stage; waitress Sophie gives her number and visits for casual sex. Violet joins Saturday errands despite Lochner and affirms their friendship. Matheson reports Monroe is furious over Emily's firing.
Chapter 3: Jonathan attends Tom and Maria's Catholic wedding and arranges July 1 utilities for Rogers Park. Monroe's team orders Jonathan to report floor problems to Matheson first. Anala warns Violet may have unspoken attachment; Sophie and unexpected guest Ivy visit before the move.
Chapter 4: Jonathan moves into Rogers Park July 1; landlord agent Kasia probes his directness and he declines sex with her. Lily spends a last night in the old apartment; Shelly helps break in the new bed July 2. Vinson hostile-work-environment litigation looms; Monroe hires a new secretary.
Chapter 5: July 4 housewarming ends at Grant Park fireworks; Jack is welcomed into the social circle. Esmeralda offers her virginity July 5 with strict confidentiality. Violet helps paint the vacated studio; Lily rekindles casual sex.
Chapter 6: Anala reviews Chrysler wager, settlement, and Bev deferral strategy. Kasia confesses she has never had sex sober; Jonathan refuses post-dinner sex. July 17 Kristy welcome party in Sugar Grove pairs Jack with Kristy; Katy and Esmeralda lose virginity; Josh Benton rapist news surfaces as Kristy's cousin.
Chapter 7: Jack stays with Kristy; Jonathan rides with Katy and Esmeralda then Cubs bleachers with Bianca and Shelly. Sophie and Ivy double-team him Monday night. Kasia walks out at Maxim's after he calls sex foolish and refuses her apartment.
Chapter 8: Violet plays games in the attic; guys' night includes Lily sex in the empty old apartment. Sunday Sox with Violet: she asks him to manage investments and plans Botanic Garden and meet-Bev dinner. Matheson approves Series 3 path July 26.
Chapter 9: July 30 nine-girl timed baseball rotation at the house; Ellie French's first time ends the game. July 31 grocery ethics talk with Bianca; Bev arrives with eight-week-old Heather in Mrs. Newton's Buick.
Chapter 10: Bev shares Jonathan's bed; gentle postpartum sex. August 1 cookout introduces friends to Bev and Heather; they defer commitment until after Christmas. Sears Tower and Brookfield Zoo stir family feelings they resist. Anala meets Bev; Spurgeon approves Series 3 exam October 20; LeBaron ordered for September 3.
Chapter 11: Bev's last intimate days end with her Saturday return to Ohio. Jonathan sets up Apple II+ and returns Atari to Jeri. Nelson approves third mailroom hire September 1. August 14 Botanic Garden with Violet; she plans to quit Lochner.
Chapter 12: Jonathan hires Sandeep Singh over Enderlee's nephew Carl for mailroom stability starting August 30. Lily resumes Wednesday cook-and-sex dates. Huifen returns August 21; they agree wait-and-see with Bev, non-exclusive dating, and Sundays reserved.
Chapter 13: Huifen frames Eastern partnership love versus Western romance. Jeri offers political introductions; Jonathan holds business-only line. August 30 Jack Nelson goes to the ER with chest pains; Jonathan acts as supervisor.
Chapter 14: Mrs. Peterson warns idealistic resistance can end careers at Spurgeon. Jonathan covers recovering Nelson, trains temp Brandon Palmer, and starts CS 101 with Violet. Matheson delivers the burgundy LeBaron; Labor Day cookout; Nelson approves Apple II for mailroom reporting.
Chapter 15: Jonathan explains two-and-twenty fees; installs Sup'R'Terminal for office reporting. SNA outage and Bob O'Day's ankle strain the mailroom. He begins Larry Mannheim's Series 3 course in Schaumburg and dines with Anala.
Chapter 16: At Jeri's Kenwood dinner Jonathan meets Marcia Blake, Gary Byrne's deputy, and attorney Nelson Boyd. Marcia notes his birth date contradicts Linda's Reds-game conception story and questions his father's plane-crash tale. He consults Bev and Huifen and keeps the secret.
Chapter 17: Violet ends therapy with Lochner and closes her DCFS case; she and Jonathan choose a slot-machine CS project. Marcia takes him to a Kenosha pub for epic debate on sex, politics, and fidelity; he declines her sexual invitations.
Chapter 18: Jonathan and Violet commit to the slot-machine project; a cheek kiss raises romantic ambiguity. Extra-Strength Tylenol cyanide panic sweeps Chicago. Nelson reveals Matheson's team will take half of floor 29 in January.
Chapter 19: Marcia and Jonathan debate ethics, prostitution, and marriage in Kenosha; he explains Bev and Huifen holding pattern. Jonathan learns his father's name is Mark Knopf, a Hallmark salesman; Linda has her first date in twenty-one years.
Chapter 20: Jonathan's floor-29 cost analysis passes Spurgeon and Matheson as a loyalty test. Matheson offers securities analyst at forty-five thousand plus bonus, start March 1, contingent on Series 3. Weekend Godfather screenings turn into group sex; witch costumes planned for Halloween.
Chapter 21: Jonathan signs the analyst offer letter with Personnel. Hawks game with Violet. At Jeri's cabal dinner he declines Marcia again. Anala at Bridgeport diner says love will never be purely logical and that he stopped treating Bev as a factor in leaving Ohio.
Chapter 22: Jonathan sits Series 3 exam confidently. Marcia agrees to FAA help tracing 1962 crashes for Mark Knopf. Huifen accepts non-exclusive terms; NFL-strike cookout; he tells her he is not ready for couple commitment.
Chapter 23: Dual IBM outages stress the mailroom; Nelson buys union peace with Bears tickets via Theo Lipari. Spurgeon makes Matheson senior vice president and commits his team to floor 29. Halloween party; contractor bids for build-out.
Chapter 24: FAA contact finds Continental Flight 11 bombing; Hallmark employee Marcus Brand died on manifest—likely true father name. Jonathan and Marcia share one incompatible sexual night then remain friends. Violet finishes slot project.
Chapter 25: Jonathan reconciles father-timeline discrepancies and decides not to pursue Kansas City relatives. He turns twenty with Bianca and Shelly. Ellie arranges a five-girl baseball game Saturday night.
Chapter 26: Loyola baseball rounds at Rogers Park; Josie loses virginity and wins morning slot. Brown Construction starts demolition on floor 29. Jonathan rotates Chrysler toward Commodore and receives an SEC letter.
Chapter 27: Series 3 license arrives November 15; promotion memo scheduled November 19. Miranda date; Jeri commits her trust to Jonathan and he lines up Nancy King and Robert Black. Bridgeport celebration; house with Jack and roommates planned.
Chapter 28: Jonathan pitches Jeri trust and friends-and-family fund; Spurgeon approves. Bianca reports Huifen may have had an abortion—Jonathan will not act without proof. Haley rain-check; Jack named successor supervisor.
Chapter 29: Uncle Alec offers realtor Bill Wyatt; Sophie, Ivy, and Deanna visit for art-school night. Violet joins friends-and-family fund. Bianca tells Jonathan she loves him.
Chapter 30: Thanksgiving in Goshen: Jonathan sleeps with Bev while Mom dates Glen Rodgers. He researches dad's death; they discuss summer trial in Chicago not marriage. Bob's process server delivers visitation petition; December 7 hearing set.
Chapter 31: Bob's server serves visitation papers at Newton home. Bev and Jonathan discuss four-bedroom house and wedding preferences without commitment. Violet dinner; Cincinnatus Fund name chosen.
Chapter 32: Nancy King consults on fund structure; Bill Wyatt flags North Hermitage house. Jeri dinner at Morton's—trust paperwork; she wants Marcia out of the group. Bev reports February custody hearing.
Chapter 33: City electrical inspection on floor 29; Nelson on Chicago union graft. Lily date and sex. Open house on North Hermitage; Juliette's threesome virginity loss with Bianca.

Chapter 36: Ellie to Uncle Alec's dinner; Lisa hostile. Spurgeon Christmas party with Haley, four-thousand-dollar bonus. Lily and Julie rear-ended on Ike; scaled-back football. Marcia grateful Jonathan stood up to Jeri.
Chapter 37: Jonathan enforces business-only boundary with Jeri. Spurgeon offers trip or ten-thousand-dollar bonus—he takes cash; analyst start moved to January 17. Goshen Christmas: Bev declines marriage; Mom and Glen engaged.
Chapter 38: Christmas ham with Glen; Bev cuddles only. Violet delayed Christmas dinner and New Year's dance invite. Bev's attorney says Jonathan need not attend hearing; engagement might look suspicious.
Chapter 39: Mystery man questions Shelly at Rogers Park. Amanda Temple of Volstead and Braun calls about Bob's case; Jonathan refuses; Bev will consult Chojnicki. Katy and Esmeralda pizza night.
Chapter 40: Chojnicki and Boyd advise refusing Ohio subpoena. Jonathan dines with Marcia in Greektown. Schoenburg tailoring; New Year's Eve detective serves deposition subpoena.
Chapter 41: New Year's party and group sex. Jeri's birthday: Margaret Lundgren insults Jonathan; business-only partnership reaffirmed. Jack tapped to replace Jonathan in mailroom; fire marshal passes floor 29.
Chapter 42: Nelson says deposition required; Jonathan books Cincinnati flights. Venice Café debate with Marcia; Deanna works there. Matheson approves January 19 hearing trip.
Chapter 43: At Hart-Lincoln, Evan Miller and Amanda Temple depose Jonathan on Bev relationship and Chicago living arrangements. Bloomberg delay pushes office move to January 22. Lily dinner.
Chapter 44: Clara Crowley loses virginity to Jonathan. NFL playoff Sunday; Bev confirms Family Services asked about marriage and Chicago move. Bianca warns against rash Cincinnati promises.
Chapter 45: Jonathan dates Beth Schoenburg from the tailor shop. UIC twins Troy and Teri Maguire in math class. Violet discusses boundaries; Haley dates continue.
Chapter 46: Seven-percent-below-list house offer rejected. Marie, Kristy's younger sister, loses virginity after Clara talked her up.
Chapter 47: Bianca and Shelly debate commitment and Jonathan's utilitarian nature regarding Bev. He rejects house counteroffer and tells Ellie he cannot commit yet.
Chapter 48: Bloomberg terminals install; Series 7 license arrives. Super Bowl party invites for Troy and Teri. Jonathan flies to Cincinnati for Bev's hearing.
Chapter 49: Clermont County hearing: favorable Family Services report for Bev until blood types prove Bob cannot be Heather's father. Bev flees; judge adjourns for non-paternity petition.
Chapter 50: Jonathan lunches with Mr. Newton; flies back and tells roommates the blood-type bombshell. Bev remains unreachable.
Chapter 51: Bloomberg training; analyst Paige Jennings resents Jonathan's rise. Office move completes Saturday. Jonathan dates Esme at her grandmother's Cicero bungalow and meets Jasmine.
Chapter 52: Sunday with Esme and Jasmine in Cicero; Dolphins playoff party at home. Bev will not name Heather's father on the phone. From a Waffle House payphone she confesses the father is Glen Rodgers—Jonathan's mother's fiancé.
