Book summary

CTL5 (Reaching New Heights, May–December 1984) follows hedge-fund wunderkind Jonathan Kane through grief, appetite, and ambition as he turns twenty-two. Bev's suicide frames the opening; Jonathan doubles down at Spurgeon Capital—building research, dodging insider-trading traps around First Chicago and CeCi's Hollywood intel, surviving Wabash Street Fund depositions, and positioning for a 1985 rate-cut rally. Domestic life at the Hancock condo is equally volatile: fundamentalist nanny Chelsea Drake is deflowered, hired live-in, and slowly deprogrammed while falling in love; CeCi rockets from film-school shorts to a John Hughes set and LA post; Deanna's Nuclear Family and erotic graphite series push patronage and boundaries; Bianca and Nicole parent Sofía amid «Abuela»'s orbit. Violet Clemmons—survivor of familial abuse—becomes Jonathan's acknowledged partner: incremental move-in rules, a leased Volvo, Greece and Super Bowl travel, a planned 1986 child, and tolerated continuity with Deanna, CeCi, and Marlena Volkmer. Sex is candid and plentiful (Saint Martin's nude week, film-shoot "method" encounters, UChicago mentees, birthday rotations) but plot-weighted against finance, compliance, and ethics debates. Jack Clinton rises as trading deputy; hires include Cynthia Taylor, Mark Bentz, and a summer intern track; clients and prospects multiply. The book ends on Christmas with gifts, CeCi's rough cut, Violet installed emotionally if not yet physically, and Jonathan honoring Keiko at Montrose—still Keiko's husband in spirit, but choosing a future with Violet and the ladder he climbed from Goshen mailroom to ~$500M AUM and multimillion-dollar compensation.
