Book summary¶

Freshman Year runs from May 1981 through May 1982. Michael Peter Loucks, eighteen, Russian Orthodox and pre-med, graduates West Monroe High and enters William Howard Taft University in McKinley. The summer before college tests faith and family: he breaks with April over church, dates Emmy and Natalya (Tasha) while ending a casual arrangement with Carol, discovers Liz's statutory rape and drug use and drives her toward rehab, and supports Jocelyn through a serious accident — then first intercourse with her in Cincinnati days before the crash. At Taft he builds a science study group, loses his virginity sequence onward with Jocelyn, Emmy, Becky, and Nancy, and is forced from home when Liz's clinicians push a false incest narrative — court, independent evals, and attorneys clear him while a temporary TRO and a Dean Parker suspension attempt both fail. He deepens evening prayer with Angie, becomes seriously involved with Melody, dates Katy in Circleville (third base only; she plans the Pill), resets Jocelyn toward lifelong friendship as she commits to Taft in the fall, and keeps Tasha on a slow traditional track. Honors biology grants and further awards free him from Saturday work; the year ends with all A's, finals in May 1982, and summer at Orlov hardware — Melody and Katy on the phone, Angie at Saint George in Loveland, Clarissa as a study partner. Seven years of school remain; academics stay the priority.

Chapter 1: After his Senior Prom, Mike reflects on turning down April's first offer of oral sex because she wasn't ready for intercourse at sixteen; he had reserved a motel room that went unused as they slept in the park instead. He spends the day of his high school graduation working at the hardware store, attending the ceremony with friends Dale and Jocelyn, and dealing with the emotional sting of Jocelyn's firm platonic stance during an after-party walk.
Chapter 2: Mike discusses future plans and relationships with his mother, including breaking up with April over religious differences. He plays chess with Dale, serves at Vespers, and ends his relationship with April after she refuses to attend his church.

Chapter 6: On Sunday, Mike grapples with guilt and spiritual conflict over his intimate encounter with Carol the previous night, considering confession.
