Book summary¶

Residency II runs February 20, 1990 – ~June 22, 1991. It opens with the aftermath of the ED shooting: Deputy Tracy Sommers dies, Shelly Lindsay and Loretta Gibbs survive, and shooter Jack Collins Jr. is killed. PGY1 Mike finishes under new Chief Dutch Wernher, then as PGY2 (June 1, 1990) trains Mary Anderson in trauma while Charlotte Michelle Korolyov-Loucks is born June 20, 1990. A nurses’ sickout, a $3.5M Ken Webber settlement, and a specialty switch to full-time emergency medicine reshape his path — culminating as Chief Resident (June 1, 1991), a new ED opening, and a nurses’ strike. The book ends when a chimney fire cuts short the family’s Vermont vacation.
