Book summary

Junior Year runs May 1983 – May 1984. Subdeacon Michael Loucks works Summer RA and Quick Mart, resets with Tasha, and deepens bonds with Clarissa, Milena, and the honors study group before Junior Fall: biochemistry, psych, CS, stats, and Stanton research. Angie vanishes and collapses into long-term care; Dean Parker resigns. Tasha becomes Mike’s first full adult lover (not betrothal); Kimiko enters as virgin then catechumen with a two-year church barrier; Sasha’s pregnancy and Deacon Grigory’s heart attack/bypass at Moore Memorial pull Mike into parish crisis. Fall ends with straight-A trajectory, Hannah and Violet, and Joel–Milena’s wedding. Spring 1984: physics, molecular biology, World Religions, and Milena’s music class; Kimiko couple-track ends; Clarissa experiment becomes sexual; Lara Bragg (Larisa Federova) becomes the calm open future; Paul’s parole and Liz’s independence advance; Harding High Class of 1984 graduates; Sasha delivers Viktoriya.   • Chapter 1: May 27–28, 1983, West Monroe — Mike tells Mrs. Mills he treated Jocelyn as unworthy without children (counselor Doctor Mercer's birdcage image) and asks her to pass his apology; Jocelyn is due home late May 28 afternoon. Liz, Mindy, and Maggie join him for Italian dinner at Lou's in Rutherford and Return of the Jedi; car and booth talk covers subdeacon rank, evangelical vs Orthodox dating rules, Dean Parker's equity push, and Maggie's father pushing Grace Bible College «pastor's wife» training while she prefers accounting. Mindy spends the night (May 28 4:45am departure).
