Book summary

Medical School I runs May 26, 1985 – mid-January 1986. Newlywed Michael and Elizaveta Loucks honeymoon in Niagara and Europe, then return for Nik and Tasha’s wedding and Mike’s diaconal ordination (July 28). He trains at the Columbus Cathedral, enters McKinley Medical School (class of 1989) with a White Coat and a Code Blue orientation concert, and forms an anatomy study group with Clarissa, Sandy, Fran, Maryam, and Peter. First-year preceptorships begin in the Moore Memorial ED under Doctor Loretta Gibbs, then pediatrics and OB/GYN with Doctor Forsberg. Parallel crises shred the parish: Peter Loucks’s adultery and divorce; Sasha and Yaroslav’s annulment; and a Spiritual Court over Deacon Vasily that ends with the bishop deposing him and dissolving Holy Transfiguration’s council — while Mike is ordered silent and his grandfather alleges Protodeacon Seraphim’s blackmail. The book ends with Mike in the middle of M1, honors-track, married, deacon, and under a bitter pill of church politics.
