Book summary¶

Residency I runs May 25, 1989 – February 19, 1990. The book opens on MD graduation day and follows PGY1 surgical Intern Mike Loucks on the trauma/ED track at Moore Memorial — red scrubs, 36-hour shifts, Free Clinic Wednesdays, Code Blue when he can, and lay prison chaplaincy at Lucasville. He survives Mastriano politics and the Firth M&M, mentors weak students, and is cleared by a pocket tape when Krista Sandberg falsely claims sex-for-grades. Kris becomes a U.S. citizen (Nov 8), is pregnant (EDD ~June 20, 1990), and Rachel turns two. Doctor Cutter becomes Medical Director; Mike helps design Match interviews for the trauma program. The book ends mid-domestic multi-casualty when gunfire hits the ED corridor and Deputy Sommers is shot in the head.
