Book summary¶
Steve Adams moves from 8th grade into freshman year in Milford, Ohio, while Swedish exchange student Birgit Andersson returns home but remains the love he measures every other girl against. Birgit and Melanie Spencer push him to gain experience before any lifelong choice; Jennie McGrath, Melanie, chess partner Jennifer Block, and Indian Hill freshman Becky van Hoek each bind him differently — friendship, lust, «making love,» or demands for exclusivity he cannot honestly give. Chess meets, Andreas' Deli, lake weekends with the Parker twins, strip chess, and a widening circle of partners run parallel to letters and calls from Birgit (and Jonas in Sweden). After New Year's grounding, confession with Father Buschmiller, and a month of secrets with Mary Harrison, Steve negotiates impossible terms with Jennifer and Becky, loses Jennifer as a best friend when he deflowers Becky, and drifts through Spring Break, dances with Bethany and Joyce, therapy with Doctor Fran Mercer for Bethany's rape trauma, and lies of omission that poison Becky's trust. The book closes in May–June 1978: Becky breaks their necklace commitment, Steve refuses Melanie's rebound and urges her toward Pete, and he commits to Youth for Understanding with Birgit still the horizon he trusts — until a thunderstorm when Melanie brings word from Sweden that Birgit died today; Steve faints and the chapter ends (cause not stated in text). Freshman year finishes in tragedy, with Sweden plans and his heart in ruins.
Chapter summaries¶
Supplemental POV: Birgits_Story.md (Birgit's Story chapters).
-
Prologue — ~2006 (vague frame; intentional misdirection possible) — Pete checks on the narrator's meal and quarters; notebooks and laptop (memoir not yet drafted); fear that leaked writing would cause trouble; narrator plans to open at 1976 after five dated childhood memories (1969 Riverside/Petty, 1969 Moon landing, 1973 St. Andrew's soldier funeral, 1974 Swords hockey, 1974 Aaron at Riverfront). Do not infer present-day relationships or later-book identity from the frame alone.
