  • Birgit's Story — Chapter 1 — July 1976, Stockholm / Detroit / Milford, Ohio — Thirteen-year-old Birgit Andersson leaves her Stockholm apartment with parents and younger sister Karin for Arlanda; Youth for Understanding routes her via Kastrup to Detroit, where a YFU volunteer checks her through Customs. Melanie Spencer meets her in the arrivals hall; host parents Frank and Trudy Spencer drive roughly five hours to their large Milford house across from the High School (Junior High behind it). En route Birgit discusses travel, English study, sailing with friend Jonas (not a boyfriend), her Yorkshire Terrier left in Sweden, and the Spencers' home sauna; Melanie confirms she has no boyfriend. Birgit is assigned an upstairs room, unpacks with Melanie's help, tours the finished basement, eats with the family, and falls asleep on her first US night. Student visa at age 13 came via her father's Foreign Ministry contacts (below usual YFU age floor).

  • Birgit's Story — Chapter 2 — July–August 1976, Milford / Cincinnati — First full day at the Spencers': breakfast (no filmjölk), car-dependent suburb, downtown Milford walk, and plans for zoo, Reds, friends, and the cabin. Family Cincinnati Zoo visit (White Bengal tigers); Sunday with cousins Elizabeth and Michelle; Monday MJHS registration with counselor Mrs. Andrews (8th-grade core + French with 9th graders; electives including Everyday Economics; fees waived; one German exchange student in 10th at the High School). Birgit phones Ms. Booher about volleyball (practice from first week of school, Tuesdays/Thursdays). Pool afternoon at Melanie's friend Amy. On Sunday 1 August 1976, Riverfront Stadium: Reds beat Padres 5–4; Birgit learns scorekeeping and names (Rose, Bench, Morgan); letter home to Mum, Dad, and Karin. Disney World discussed as too far for a quick trip.
