Churches and community¶

Terminology¶

Matushka — Russian title for a priest's or deacon's wife in Russian Orthodox usage (literally «little mother»); honorific, not a clerical rank. Use Matushka before the name when citing the title (e.g. Matushka Anastasia, Matushka Alexandra). Two different Matushkas named Anastasia appear in GM: Anastasia Alexandrov (Father Herman, West Monroe) and Anastasia Minsky (Deacon Grigory, McKinley).

Saint Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church (McKinley)¶

Mike's college parish near William Howard Taft University; he confesses here with Father Nicholas (while still tied to Holy Transfiguration and his home «бабушки» in West Monroe). GM1: attends regularly; chants/reads in Lent; discusses Reader/Subdeacon tonsure. GM2: Reader Jan 23, 1983; Subdeacon May 7, 1983. Mike's home Russian Orthodox parish; Loucks family, the Antonov family, the Orlovs, and the «бабушки» matchmaking circle center here. Largest drug store in McKinley; Tasha will work as a pharmacy technician there after she moves from West Monroe (Deacon Vasily referral, Oct 27, 1983 intel — GM3 ch 37). Clarissa and Mike buy supplies there at lower prices than campus bookstore (GM3 ch 61).
